Formal Mentoring Match-up

The Women Mentoring Women Partnership Programme was replicated by Lucy Kanu in Nigeria from the Fortune’s Most Powerful Women mentoring programme in 2008.

The programme matches young women between the ages of 18 and 35 (Mentees) with inspirational women leaders (Mentors) who can guide them in developing their personality, self-esteem and help them grow their small businesses, nurture relationships and make positive life choices at variant levels of challenges.

The programme seeks to establish a connection with and build a sense of responsibility in the next generation of women leaders and local community, by developing and implementing citizen based mentoring partnerships that benefit young women in Nigeria whilst it identifies and develops a support structure for aspiring women leaders.

Testimonials

 Mentee: Alice Olagunju

"I got into the mentoring programme as I hoped it would help develop my passion and the plans I had for myself. I had a passion for educating and counseling but had no idea how to get the ball rolling. I got in, and was successful in all the screening exercises and got paired with Ms. Comfort Ogunye (position). The programme indeed anchored my aspiration. After she heard about my goals in life, we discussed and made plans on how they could be achieved.

Good news is, I have just conducted a vocational training, sponsored by my Mentor on transformational leadership, Health education (Especially on personal Hygiene), and career talk on hair making and Barbing with demonstrations for deaf and dumb students in Ogba Primary School. Materials were also donated to the students after the training.

Meeting with Ms. Ogunye changed my life and today I am impressed with this achievement and the boost in my confidence.

I am grateful to Idea Builders for having connected me to such a wonderful and inspiring woman as Ms. Ogunye"- Alice Olagunju (nee Effiong)

Mentee: Agatha Folstrom

"I have been very reluctant to share my experience during the mentoring program because my mentor and I had challenges with time. On the other hand I was inspired by Lucy and friends I met during the program who are my best friends today. During the program I stumbled into a meeting with Lucy, Ofunna and Tine. Lucy asked me my dreams and what i was doing to achieve them. i told her to study in the Uk and make short documentaries Lucy said to me, "Why the UK? It's so expensive there and you may end up not completing your studies. Why not try South Africa or Europe?" She went ahead to share her experience with me and that changed my story.
Today, i have studied in Europa made documentaries around Europa. I currently am working in Sweden with kids between the ages of 6-9 to help them develop their ability to show respect, ability to take responsibility for their actions and resolve conflicts.

I say all these just to let you know that even if the mentoring cycle didn't completely meet my expectations, that night with Lucy and all the lectures from the program changed and mentored me.
I suggest in the next WMW idea builders should create 1:1 with Lucy and other participants.
Kind regards"- Agatha Akhabue

Mentors:

“When I got nominated to be a mentor, I was very scared but excited, expectant and looked forward to mentoring a young lady and pass down valuable lessons and advise that had helped me shape my life. I really didn’t have much expectations and I must confess, the human nature in me longed to be matched with someone with interests in the financial services industry since that is where my major strength lies. However, I was matched with a lady with interests in the fashion industry.

This greatly challenged me to learn more about the industry outside the basic knowledge I had and it was a very refreshing outcome. We had great time learning from each other’s views. Abisola’s first designs should be out soon”- Ms. Enobong Ezekiel
